The trial of Senate President Bukola Saraki was definitely a notable day. The internet was buzzing and the issue was trending.

There were many speculations as to the genesis of the drama and the question was asked: was this persecution or justice taking place?

Bosco Ntaganda: ICC Trial Updates

The trial of former Congolese rebel leader, Bosco Ntaganda, started on Wednesday at the International Criminal Court (ICC) at the Hague.

Here are updates so far:

  • The prosecution alleged at the opening of his trial on Wednesday that his troops murdered and raped civilians.
  • Chief prosecutor Fatou Bensouda called him a “notorious and powerful'” military leader whose troops slaughtered hundreds of civilians in eastern DR Congo during a brutal conflict in 2002 and 2003.
  • He has denied all 18 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Dasuki’s Trial

Former National Security Adviser (NSA), Mohammed Sambo Dasuki was arraigned on Tuesday before a Federal High Court in Abuja on a one-count charge of illegal possession of fire arms, an offence punishable under section 27(i) (a)(i) of the Firearms Act Cap F28 LFN 2004 and which attracts 14 years jail term.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge, following which Justice Adeniyi Ademola granted him bail on self recognisance, upon an application by his lawyer, Joseph Daudu (SAN). Continue reading “Dasuki’s Trial”

In contempt of Nollywood.

Okay, Hollywood goes a great length to ensure accuracy in their movies. They bring in experts, conduct their own investigations and also do their due diligence when it comes to making blockbuster movies that we can’t wait to watch or illegally download 😉

Not only does this help in building a reputation of awesome movies, but whoever is watching can relate to the movie, knowing that they also go through the same thing. For example, if i’m a doctor watching the many tv-shows and movies Hollywood creates I can empathise when they try to resuscitate a patient for instance or feel the same tension they experience during surgery.

As a lawyer I enjoy watching crime dramas and court room drama series perfectly executed. Now here is my question, why can’t the same be said about Nollywood?? Continue reading “In contempt of Nollywood.”

Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta charged with corruption

BBC Reports:

Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta has been charged with several counts of corruption in a long-running investigation, prosecutors say.

He faces charges of fraud, tax evasion and money laundering dating back to when he was a lawyer before he became prime minister in 2012, the country’s anti-corruption agency DNA said.

Some of his property has been seized pending the outcome of the case, the agency added.

Mr Ponta denies any wrongdoing.

Insight: How coroner court indicted T.B Joshua’s SCOAN

AFTER 10 months of sitting, the Lagos Coroner’s Inquest into the collapse of a six-storey building belonging to the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), yesterday, in Ikeja indicted the church for “criminal negligence” and recommended that it be prosecuted. 116 people died in the tragic incident.

The court said the Church did not get the necessary permit or approval before commencing  construction of the building.

The Lagos State Government inaugurated the Coroner’s Inquest under the state’s Coroner’s System Law No. 7 of 2007 to investigate the cause and circumstances leading to the death of 116 people, mostly South Africans,  following the building collapse of September 12, 2014, and bring its findings and recommendations to the appropriate authorities.

TB Joshua and the rubbles from the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), building collapse were 116 people died last year.

Court Order: Nnamani to forfeit assets to Fed Govt

Justice Mohammed Yinusa of the Federal High Court, Lagos today July 8, 2015 convicted four companies associated with former governor of Enugu State, Chimaroke Nnamani and ordered that their properties be forfeited to the Federal Government.  The four companies are Rainbownet Nigeria Limited, Cosmos FM, Capital City Automobile Nigeria Limited and Renaissance University Teaching Hospital

The companies had on May 19, 2015 pleaded guilty to a 10-count amended charge brought against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. The companies are alleged to have failed to comply with lawful inquiry made by the Commission.

At today’s sitting, counsel to the EFCC Kelvin Uzozie prayed  the court to make an order of final forfeiture of the companies based on their plea. Justice Yinusa after reviewing the facts convicted the companies and made an order of final forfeiture of their assets to the Federal Government, citing provision of the EFCC Establishment Act on Final Forfeiture.
